PART 02 · Hiring decisions

Fractional CMO vs. Marketing Agency: Which Does Your Event Company Need?

A marketing agency usually delivers defined services. A fractional CMO leads the strategy across those services. The right choice depends on whether your event business needs direction, execution or both.

Start with the decision that keeps returning to you

If you already know your ideal client, offer, campaign priorities and budget, the missing piece may be execution. An agency can produce content, manage advertising or improve a website against a clear brief. Ask for the deliverables, reporting and approval process in writing.

If every vendor asks you what to do next, you may have a leadership gap. Someone needs to decide what matters, resolve competing channel recommendations and connect marketing activity to the booking pipeline. That is the work a fractional CMO should address.

Compare responsibility, not job titles

Ask a prospective partner who creates the strategy, who produces the work and who reports on the results. A consultant may recommend changes without implementing them. An agency may manage one channel well without owning the broader plan. A full-time marketing employee may still need senior direction.

For an event company with several brands or locations, responsibility is especially important. Establish whether the scope covers one business, multiple venues or separate service lines. Do not assume an executive title includes unlimited campaigns, design or vendor management.

Keep useful partners in place

You do not necessarily need to replace your photographer, website developer or advertising specialist. A marketing leader can align existing partners around a shared brief, calendar and reporting process. Confirm which relationships the partner will coordinate and who retains contract authority.

A luxury venue might retain a specialist production team while outsourcing campaign direction and lead follow-up. A catering company might keep its internal coordinator and add senior planning support. Match the structure to the actual gap rather than rebuilding the team by default.

Use a practical hiring brief

Write down the decisions you want to delegate, the recurring work that must happen and the numbers you can share. Then ask each candidate to explain the first month, the monthly scope and how recommendations become completed work.

BMG offers content and visibility support, managed booking campaigns, and an Outsourced CMO plan with weekly leadership. Compare those levels against your existing team. Choose the scope that removes the bottleneck instead of buying the longest list of services.
